A Quest for Purpose and Meaning in History

Michael Cassity is a professional historian and photographer whose work explores the circumstances of our existence, questions the direction of social change, and seeks public and private paths in life that are meaningful and authentic.  I am Michael Cassity.

I begin my quest with a simple observation:  History is important.  How we understand history makes a difference in how we see ourselves and others today and how we push forward in our individual and collective lives to create the world we and our children will live in tomorrow.  History is dry and meaningless only if we fail to ask meaningful questions; it is trivial only if we trivialize it.  The calling of the historian is unlike most other callings and provides a valuable opportunity and also a significant challenge.  The rewards of active, thoughtful, and focused inquiry are profound and are to be shared as widely as possible.

Please join me in a journey into the past, into the world around us, and into our very purpose as citizens of the twenty-first century.  Who knows where the path may lead?

If you have thoughts to share, please contact me.  To help you reach me, and to encourage dialogue, I have included a simple form at a separate page here.

A Wyoming Trilogy

Picture

This "trilogy" consists of three studies of Wyoming's past that together examine the continuous transformation in the lives of Wyoming's people from the first permanent settlement at Fort Laramie to the 1960s.
